What Junk Removal Will (and Won't) Take

The green list is longer than you think, and the short red list has good reasons. What goes on the truck, what doesn't, and what to do with the exceptions.

The most common junk removal question has a mostly happy answer: if it's in your house, garage, or yard and it's not hazardous, it almost certainly goes on the truck. The short list of exceptions exists for safety and legal reasons — and even those have local solutions.

The green list: nearly everything

Furniture of every kind, mattresses, appliances big and small, electronics, exercise equipment, clothing, housewares, toys, tools, yard debris, fencing, lumber, renovation debris, and the general archaeology of attics and garages. If two people can lift it and it isn't hazardous, it's a truck item — including the awkward stuff like pianos and hot tubs, which are everyday work for a full crew.

The gray zone: ask first

A few categories depend on the specific situation. Very heavy materials — concrete, soil, rock, roofing — are handled but priced by weight rather than volume. Vehicles and large machinery vary by crew. Anything unusually large, heavy, or fixed in place is worth describing on the call so the quote and the crew arrive prepared.

The red list: hazardous materials

Paints, solvents, fuels, pesticides, pool chemicals, asbestos-containing materials, and medical waste don't go on the truck — disposal law and crew safety both say so. This isn't the crew being picky: hazardous loads contaminate entire truckloads and carry serious penalties at the disposal site.

What to do with the red list instead

Every community has a lawful channel: household hazardous waste collection events, permanent drop-off facilities, and retailer take-back programs for items like paint and batteries. The crew knows the local options and will point you at the right one — the goal is everything leaving your property, just via the correct doors.
